Voting is a critical part of participating in democracy, but sometimes little things—like an expired driver's license—can make you unsure if you're eligible to vote. In Georgia, you might wonder if that old, expired license or state ID will keep you from casting your ballot. Here's what you need to know.
First, You Can Vote with an Expired Georgia License/State ID
If your driver's license is expired, don’t worry! You can still use it to vote in Georgia. An expired license is considered a valid form of identification at the polls. When you appear to vote, election officials must confirm your identity and an expired ID works for that purpose. Your address does not even have to match your current address (but you should always make sure you update your voter registration when you move!).
Other Forms of ID
If you don’t have your license with you, there are other acceptable forms of photo identification in Georgia. These include things like a state-issued ID card, voter ID cards issued by your county Board of Elections, U.S. passport, military ID, tribal ID, and College student ID (only if issued by one of the Georgia Board of Regents schools, not a private University). You can even use an unexpired out-of-state driver's license.
The Most Important Thing: Show Up
Regardless of whether your ID has expired, the most important thing is showing up to vote. Don’t let minor issues stop you from having your say in elections. Every vote matters, and yours does too!
